Five Questions: ID.ology's Laura Sullivan

Leading and managing one of the most talented interior design firms in the Asheville area, Sullivan took time out of her busy schedule to sit down with us to answer a few questions. Creativity is a mysterious thing, so it’s always interesting when you can get the insights behind thoughtful design.

How did you get started in interior design?

I began the professional journey of Interior Design in 2002 with a lifelong love of all things art, building and design. Being involved in the family real estate business, on job sites, and in art classes over the span of my childhood through to the point of choosing my vocation Interior Design came natural.

Where do you find your design inspiration?

It is around me every day, God’s creation, and all the natural elements!  Traveling to various countries is very inspiring in that the architecture, and history speak to many styles, cultures and trends.

What elements define your mountain home style?

If you were to ponder a mountain along with every side and angle of it, you’ll see that it was beautifully and organically created.  You see the endless color combinations, the shapes and sizes of rock, sometimes water, and not to mention not one is identical.  Just like every project that comes our way, not one is the exact same. Mountains are full of inspiration and beauty. Designing a home with mountain style calls for one to infuse the outdoors with the in to cultivate a feel of nourishment, relaxation, comfort and peace. Organic and natural features are a priority not only aesthetically, psychologically, but for healthy living as well.

How do you decide which projects are a good fit for you and your firm?

Each project is unique and has it’s own overall aesthetic and scope. My team and I have the capability to be very versatile, but do appreciate Clients who find value in our philosophy of quality, health and high style.

What do you prioritize when planning a budget?

The main living spaces are the heart and soul of a home. That’s not to say other secondary areas are not as important, they just hold a different weight. Where homeowners will spend the majority of their time is a priority in and of itself, so we get to know how our Clients will actually live in their homes in order to fully understand what areas will be most important to them. We always prioritize space planning for scale, circulation, comfort, and appeal as well as healthy products to help preserve the health of our Clients in their homes.
