Designing A Dream On Lake Lure

Now, tall windows let plenty of light into this Lake Lure, NC, gem. By Allard+Roberts Interior Design. Photography by David Dietrich.

The aim of this historic home renovation and addition was to maintain the historic look and feel while increasing usable living space, adding covered indoor/outdoor living area, increasing views, remodeling the master suite and adding a lower level guest suite.

Our design time space planned the interiors, elevated all walls, designed fireplace surrounds and built-ins, custom bathroom vanities, ceiling details, ship lap accents, selected and specified all fixtures and finishes, and furnished and decorated each room. Because this is a second home and our clients live hours away, we managed the daily decision making process on-site with the builder and tradesmen.

Views flows through the living room, dining room and out to the outdoor living space.

While the site is spectacular, the views of the lake and mountains was obstructed by sliding doors and tiny dining room windows. The deck was only accessible through the Sunroom and Kitchen, but not the main living area. A Nanawall system of sliding and stacking doors now opens up the main living and dining space to the new screened porch, complete with stone fireplace and a TV. Indoor-outdoor living is possible year round with this new layout.

The old Sunroom sliders were removed in favor of a cased opening. New picture windows beyond allow a view through from the Living Space. Three separate areas are combined for better views, a new furniture plan, and indoor-outdoor living and entertaining.

The Master Suite renovation includes a large bedroom, bath and closet. Glass French doors open to the Sunroom, so that the view can be enjoyed from the Master bed. When the doors are open, the lake views are visible, but when privacy or light control are needed, the custom traversing draperies close across them.

Downstairs, the new kitchenette provides a sink and faucet, microwave and coffee maker for the guests who each have their own bedroom, closet and bathroom. The lower deck is also accessible from the Guest suite and Lower Family Room.

Our clients can now entertain and enjoy their vacation home (soon to be full-time residence upon retirement), with views of the lake and mountains from almost every room.
